• The name change will then be forwarded to Docata.

Please provide your private mailing address. You can log into Docata at any time and change or add these data. Please always update your contact details; this is the only way to obtain important information during the doctoral phase.

If you have a mobile phone and enter the number here, University of Hamburg offers you additional services such as the "Forgot your password?" is send by SMS for your university identification (B-Kennung).

Docata account

You can change your correspondence email at any time. Please note your correspondence email is your user name in Docata.

University account

If you use your university account at University of Hamburg you cannot change your correspondence email. Please note, we exclusively send e-mails to the university e-mail connectes to your university user account.

The selection of the faculty must be correct.

This applies in particular to the Faculty of Business Administration and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, as well as the Medical Faculty (UKE) and Faculty for Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences who offer similar doctoral subjects.

After selecting the faculty, the doctoral regulations and the doctoral subjects of this faculty are displayed.

Discuss with your supervisor whether there is an institutional cooperation involved. This information can be updated in Docata at any time after approval. Option list:

Doctorate without cooperation:
This applies when your research will be conducted at an institute or other establishment at Universität Hamburg, even if you have taken an (external) employment that is unrelated to your research project/your doctoral studies.
Doctorate in cooperation with another university in Germany:
This only includes cooperation involving formal, institutional arrangements. It does not apply when a supervisor or reviewer
(assessor) at another German university has played a role in your doctoral studies without a formal, institutional arrangement.
Doctorate in cooperation with a foreign/non-German university, binational doctorate
(Cotutelle):
This must involve a contractual arrangement according to Joint doctorates with foreign institutions of the doctoral degree regulations that apply for your doctoral procedures. It does not apply when a supervisor or reviewer (assessor) at a university abroad has played a role in your doctoral studies without a formal, institutional arrangement.
Doctorate in cooperation with a university of applied sciences:
This only includes cooperation involving formal, institutional arrangements. It does not apply when a supervisor or reviewer
(assessor) at a university of applied sciences has played a role in your doctoral studies without a formal, institutional arrangement.
Doctorate in cooperation with a non-university research institute:
This applies when you work within a non-university research institution as part of your doctoral studies and must
involve a contractual cooperation agreement.
Doctorate in cooperation with industry (industry-sponsored doctorate) or other institution:
This applies when you work in the research department of a company or other organization as part of your doctoral studies or when your doctoral studies are undertaken in connection with a research contract from a company or other organization and you have a contract or other written agreement.

You might enter a search string to display a shorter the list (e. g. "Max" displays all Max Planck Institutes).

Do you mainly work in the library or at your private workplace? Select ‘external institution’, ‚other‘ and, as the type of institution, 'Home Office'.

Are you doing your doctorate in an external institution that is missing from the shortlist? Then select ‚Other‘ and complete the information.

This information is required for the university statistics. You can change or add information at any time after admission.

Will you participate in a structured doctoral program?
Examples: Doctoral study program in your faculty, Graduate School in a Collaborative Research Center (CRC), Graduate School in a non-university Research Institute.

If the start of the membership has not yet been determined, indicate the probable start date. You can update the date at any time after approval.

Discuss this information with your supervisor. The information is important for the admission procedure and must correspond to the regulations in the doctoral degree regulations.

If the start of the doctoral project has not yet been determined, enter the probable start date.

We need information on the type of dissertation for the university statistics; this information can be changed when the dissertation is submitted.

• Make sure your information is correct. This will facilitate processing your application and the decision on admission by the doctoral committee. In the case of a master’s degree, information about the bachelor’s degree must also be given.

• Use the information on the certificate and the transcript of records from your university degree to insert all data correctly.

• Please note: In case you studied for a teaching position, please insert Educational Science as ‘subject’.

Note on some fields and the option list:
The option lists are in accordance with the requirements for reporting official statistics and are quite long. The following helpful hints can facilitate the work of applicants when completing the online application:
University details
In case of German universities: Please enter first the location of the respective higher education institution under ‘Institution’ (e.g. Freiburg); this shortens the option list to the higher education institutions in the respective city/place.

In case of universities abroad: If a course of study has been completed outside Germany, please provide the official name of the respective higher education institution under ‘Name of university’ and the official name of the city/place under ‘Place’.

Details on subjects
Please enter the name of your subject or a part of the name under ‘Subject’ (e.g. Medicine); this shortens the option list. In case you studied for a teaching position, insert 'Educational Science' as subject.
Details on time course of studies
Please enter the beginning (under ‘from’) and the termination (under ‘to’) of your enrollment at the respective higher education institution, i.e. you have to provide the time during which you have been enrolled as a student in the respective higher education institution.
Please enter under ‘Date of completion’ the date of completion of your degree; this date is usually stated in your degree certificate or your transcript of records.

Details on result

Please state your final grade under ‘Final grade’ exactly as stated in your degree certificate or your transcript of records. In case of degrees completed abroad: A conversion into the German grade system is not required here.

If you have several degrees (e.g. two master’s degrees), please select the degree that is related to your chosen doctoral subject.

According to the doctoral degree regulations, you are obliged to provide information if you have carried out a doctoral procedure at another university or faculty.

In case you enter an employment at University of Hamburg or University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) , your position is mentioned in your contract.

Documents in PDF format must be as small as possible (max. 10 MB). Please make sure that scans are of sufficient quality.
