For German-language doctoral degrees, the following options are available under “pursued academic title”: Doktor (male), Doktorin (female), or Doktor:in (gender-neutral). You may change your selection during the doctoral program and when applying to initiate the doctoral examination process. The title you select will appear on your doctoral diploma.

Discuss with your supervisor whether there is an institutional cooperation involved. This information can be updated in Docata at any time after approval.

Doctorate without cooperation:
This applies when your research will be conducted at an institute or other establishment at Universität Hamburg, even if you have taken an (external) employment that is unrelated to your research project/your doctoral studies.

Doctorate in cooperation with another university in Germany:
This only includes cooperation involving formal, institutional arrangements. It does not apply when a supervisor or reviewer
(assessor) at another German university has played a role in your doctoral studies without a formal, institutional arrangement.

Doctorate in cooperation with a foreign/non-German university, binational doctorate (Cotutelle):
This must involve a contractual arrangement according to Joint doctorates with foreign institutions of the doctoral degree regulations that apply for your doctoral procedures. It does not apply when a supervisor or reviewer (assessor) at a university abroad has played a role in your doctoral studies without a formal, institutional arrangement.

Doctorate in cooperation with a university of applied sciences:
This only includes cooperation involving formal, institutional arrangements. It does not apply when a supervisor or reviewer

Doctorate in cooperation with a non-university research institute:
This applies when you work within a non-university research institution as part of your doctoral studies and must involve a contractual cooperation agreement.

Doctorate in cooperation with industry (industry-sponsored doctorate) or other institution:
This applies when you work in the research department of a company or other organization as part of your doctoral studies or when your doctoral studies are undertaken in connection with a research contract from a company or other organization and you have a contract or other written agreement.

University details

• For universities within Germany: In the “University” field (after selecting “Germany” as the “Country”), first type in the city; this narrows the selection to universities in that city.
• For universities outside Germany: If you completed your studies at a university outside Germany, enter the official full name of the university in the “Name of the University” field and the official full name of the city in the “City” field.

Details on subjects

• Enter the name or part of the name of your subject under ‘Subject’ (e.g. Medicine or Psychology); this will narrow down the list of options.
• Note: For teacher training programs, select 'Educational Science' as subject.

Details on time course of studies

• Please enter the start date (in the “From” field) and the end date (in the “To” field) of your enrollment period at the respective institution; that is, the period during which you were enrolled as a student at that institution.
• In the “Date of completion” field, enter the date you completed your exams. This date is listed on your diploma or certificate.

Details on result

• Please enter your final grade in the ‘Final grade’ field exactly as it appears on your degree certificate or your transcript of records. In case of degrees completed abroad: A conversion into the German grade system is not required here.

Select the university degree that qualifies you for a doctoral program. This is typically a master’s degree in a field closely related to your doctoral subject.
