Application for admission to the doctoral procedures
1. Before you start the online application
- Docata is not an application platform for stipends. Register here, after you found a supervisor and doctoral project at University of Hamburg.
- The admission to doctoral procedures is based on the respective doctoral degree regulations in the respective faculty of University of Hamburg. Inform yourself at your prospective faculty about the applications process and then start the online application. See Contact for further information in the faculties.
- Docata is the digital file management for doctoral procedures at University of Hamburg. With Docata, you as an applicant and future doctoral researcher at University of Hamburg have secure online access to all information and documents for your doctoral procedure.
2. Prepare Documents
- At the end of the application you must upload further documents.
- Which documents are uploaded to Docata results from the doctoral degree regulations and the administrative processes in the faculties. For further informations about document to be uloaded visit the website of your faculty.

- Please also note the information on which documents are uploaded in one PDF file. This will make the work of the doctoral committee easier.
- You will find forms for all documents marked with (form) on the website of your faculty.
- For foreign university degrees, an officially certified translation into German or English must be submitted.
- Please make sure that the documents are of sufficient quality. Documents in PDF format must be as small as possible (max. 10 MB). Please note Upload is only possible for PDF documents, encrypted PDF documents are not allowed.
3. Clarify specific questions with your supervisor
- As part of the online application, you are asked for information that you should discuss with your supervisor in advance. These are information on cooperation, type of doctorate and employment relationships which can be updated or changed in Docata at any time after admission.

Type of doctorate: Will your doctoral studies involve a form of cooperation?
This applies in the case of institutional cooperation involving a contract or other agreement.

Type of doctorate: Will you participate in a structured doctoral program?
Examples: Doctoral study program in your faculty, Graduate School in a Collaborative Research Center (CRC), Graduate School in a non-university Research Institute. - In addition to your supervisor, are there any other researchers who will support you during your research work (e.g. further supervisors)?
- Are you planning to submit a monograph or a cumulative dissertation?
- Are you employed by Universität Hamburg or UKE during your doctoral studies?
- Register in Docata is the first step for the application to admission for a doctorate at University of Hamburg. Ensure that you data in the application are correct.
